VIDEO / Christmas Eve Truce - World War One December 1914 / "Joyeux Noel" (2005)

Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas) Movie Poster - 2005

Aleksandra's Note: Regardless of whatever "myth" may surround the "Christmas Truce" between enemies on the Western Front on that now legendary Christmas Eve in December of 1914 during World War One, the story is based on actual events and gives hope and inspiration in the power of peace over war. Although this particular event does not involve the Serbians who were on the Allied side in WWI, the message speaks to all sides in that terrible war that was supposed to "end all wars".

The "Christmas Truce" was just a moment in time. The war that was supposed to be over, according to German predictions, by December of 1914, would go on another four long years, to become the most destructive war mankind had ever known up to that point in history.

Merry Christmas and may mankind one day truly know "Peace on Earth".

Sincerely,
Aleksandra Rebic

"Serbian military cemetery Zeitenlik in Thessaloniki, Greece, the final resting place of Serbian, French, Italian, British and Russian soldiers killed in battle and the breakthrough of the Salonika front during World War I. The complex was built on a place where the main military field hospital of the Serbian army was located in 1916. All the materials for the construction of the cemetery, which had previously been processed, came from Serbia. Greece has given way to free land for construction of the 7,000 square meters complex, and all building materials and labor were released of taxes. Cypress trees, brought to Zeitenlik from Hilandar Monastery as young seedlings, were planted around the Serbian part of the cemetery to create a kind of eternal guard for the fallen heroes, while the mosaics of the chapel were done by the motives of Serbian medieval frescoes."
