"Today [August 19, 2018] the Serbs mark 104 years since the Battle of Cer, the first victory of the Allies in World War I, with a ceremony in the village of Tekeriš near Loznica. Laurel wreaths will be laid at the Memorial ossuary in Tekeriš and state and military honors will be paid to the fallen Serbian heroes. The Battle of Cer, which took place in August 1914, is one of the most important and biggest victories of the Serbian army in the whole course of the First World War, and at the same time it is a shining example of a tactically well designed and performed military operation. Serbian army led by General Stepa Stepanović showed immeasurable courage and patriotism and managed to defeat the superior Austro-Hungarian army in the Battle of Cer."

SEĆANJE NA 28. JUL 1918. GODINE

Dan kad se srpska zastava vijorila nad Belom kućom

I u tome nisu sami.

The Significance of JULY 28 in Serbian-American History / WWI begins and America formally honors Serbia as an Ally, paying tribute to her contributions and sacrifice.

Photo of the Serbian and American flags flying at Serbian National Defense headquarters in Chicago by Aleksandra Rebic July 2018.

Aleksandra's Note: Today, July 28, 2018, marks two important anniversaries. On this date in 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, thus beginning what would turn into the First World War. On this date in 1918, exactly one century ago, the Serbian flag flew at the White House in Washington, D.C. at the request of American President Woodrow Wilson, to honor the Serbian contributions and sacrifices in WWI and to stand in solidarity with Serbia as an Ally.

Sincerely,
Aleksandra Rebic

U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing implores Americans throughout the land to honor their WWI ally, the Serbians, on July 28, 1918 - The day when the Serbian and American flags flew together at the White House.

Aleksandra's Note: 100 years ago this month, Robert Lansing, the U.S. Secretary of State in the administration of President Woodrow Wilson, implored Americans throughout the land to honor the Serbians on July 28, 1918 - the day when the Serbian and U.S. flags flew together at the White House. It was on July 28, 1914 that Austria declared war on Serbia and the First World War, also known as the "Great War", also known as WWI, and also known as "The War to End All Wars", began.

This is an important centennial marker and represents the way it should always be, as Serbia has always been a loyal ally of the United States, no matter what, and for over a century Serbs have been coming to America to become loyal, dedicated, and productive citizens of the U.S.A.

Sincerely,
Aleksandra Rebic

From the U.S. Embassy in Serbia website:

"Relations between Serbia and the United States of America during World War I, the “Great War,” were as friendly allies. July 28, 1918, however, was especially important for Serbs and Americans. On this day America marked the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Great War, when, according to the words of U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing, “honorable Serbian people were forced to defend their country and their homes against an enemy who wanted to destroy them,” and when the Serbian people, “sacrificed everything for freedom and independence.”

"Americans clearly expressed their support and sympathy for the Serbian people from the very beginning of the Great War. During 1914, 1915 and 1916, enormous financial support and thousands of tons of humanitarian aid were provided to the Serbian people from the United States. There was money for food for civilians, for refugees, to fight typhoid, seed to plant for the next harvest, agricultural tools, and even funding to lease refugee transport ships.

"The United States of America officially celebrated July 28, 1918 as “Serbia Day.” On July 27, U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing called on every American citizen to, “gather on Sunday, July 28 in their churches in order to express their sympathies toward this enslaved nation (Serbia) and their oppressed brothers in other countries and to invoke the blessing of the almighty God for them and cause that they are fighting for.”  Thanks to a report by the Serbian Ambassador to the United States and an article published in Detroit News, we know today that, “over the White House and other public institutions waved the Serbian flag for the first time.” Other than the American and Serbian flags, only one other has been flown over the White House. That was the French flag, on the 131th anniversary of the fall of the Bastille, on July 14, 1920."

Serbian Ambassador Mihajlovic sends detailed report to the Serbian MFA on the Serbian Day in Washington, including the description of the Serbian flag being raised above the White House.

FULL TEXT OF U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE ROBERT LANSING'S MESSAGE REGARDING THE SERBIANS IN JULY 1918:

"On Sunday, 28th of this present month, will occur the fourth anniversary of the day when the gallant people of Serbia, rather than submit to the studied and ignoble exactions of a prearranged foe, were called upon by the war declaration of Austria-Hungry to defend their territory and their homes against an enemy bent on their destruction. Nobly did they respond.

"So valiantly and courageously did they oppose the forces of a country ten times greater in population and resources that it was only after they had thrice driven the Austrians back and Germany and Bulgaria had come to the aid of Austria that they were compelled to retreat into Albania. While their territory has been devastated and their homes despoiled, the spirit of the Serbian people has not been broken. Though overwhelmed by superior forces, their love of freedom remains unabated. Brutal force has left unaffected their firm determination to sacrifice everything for liberty and independence.

"It is fitting that the people of the United States, dedicated to the self-evident truth that is the right of the people of all nations, small as well as great, to live their own lives and choose their own government, and remembering that the principles for which Serbia has so nobly fought and suffered are those for which the United States is fighting, should on the occasion of this anniversary manifest in an appropriate manner their war sympathy with this oppressed people who have so heroically resisted the aims of the Germanic nations to master the world. At the same time, we should not forget the kindred people of the Great Slavic race–the Poles, the Czechs and Jugo-Slavs, who, now dominated and oppressed by alien races yearn for independence and national unity.

"This can be done in a manner no more appropriate than in our churches. I, therefore, appeal to the people of the United States of all faiths and creeds to assemble in their several places of worship on Sunday July 28, for the purpose of giving expression to their sympathy with this subjugated people and their oppressed and dominated kindred in other lands, and to invoke the blessings of Almighty God upon them and upon the cause to which they are pledged."

Centennial Commemoration of "The Day the Serbian Flag Flew at the White House" in Washington, D.C.

JOINT STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDENTS OF THE
SERBIAN NATIONAL DEFENSE COUNCIL OF AMERICA AND THE SERB NATIONAL FEDERATION

June 29, 2018 – Pittsburgh/Chicago

The Presidents of the two oldest Serbian organizations in the United States, the Serbian National Defense Council of America and the Serb National Federation, issued today the following joint statement:

Next month we will join Serbian-Americans from across the country in Washington, DC, under the Patronage of His Grace Bishop Irinej and the World War I Centennial Commission of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson’s declaration of a Day of Prayer for Serbia and the historic flying of the Serbian flag at the White House.

This important milestone, which will be marked by a series of events, is an opportunity to reflect on the historic alliance and friendship between the United States and Serbia that saw us stand in defense of our shared values in both World Wars—from the Salonika Front to Operation Halyard. It will also be an opportunity to recall a time when our community helped shape, through its unique contributions and active involvement, policies and decisions that reflected those values.

In a time when so many of our people continue to face oppression and persecution, when so many still remain driven from their homes, when our churches and monasteries and cultural heritage remain under threat—it is once again important for the voices of Serbian-Americans to be heard in our Nation’s capital.

We encourage you to be a part of this historic commemoration and look forward to seeing you in Washington, DC.

Nebojsa Zivkovic, President
Serbian National Defense Council of America

John Martich, President
Serbian National Federation
